Damien Hirst at Sotheby's: The Kingdom
Sotheby’s quotes Damien Hirst as saying “I think the market is bigger than anyone knows. I love art, and this proves I’m not alone.” After much fanfare and controversy, and against the surreal backdrop of a severe financial market collapse led by Lehman Brothers buckling in the largest bankruptcy in US history, “Beautiful Inside My Head Forever” Damien Hirst’s direct-to-the-market auction by Sotheby’s London, was a conclusive success. Perhaps boosted in part by a recently lower British pound, the groundbreaking sale collected $127 million dollars (£70 million) on the first day, and an additional $72.9 million dollars (£40.9 million) on the second day for a grand total just shy of $200 million dollars, beating the previous record for the auction of a collection by a single artist formerly held by Picasso by roughly ten times, which fetched $20 million for an 88-work collection in 1993.

I am back in Stockholm, preparing my final exhibition. Reading interesting stuff and went to some great lecctures.
I am really atached to a word called "alter modern"
Altermodern is a term that describes art made in today's global context which is a reaction against standardisation and commercialism. It is defined by Nicolas Bourriaud in the title of the Tate Modern's fourth Triennial exhibition.2008-10-03
Charles Avery at Parasol Unit
Yesterday I went to Parasol Unit exhibition with Charles Avery. It was a talk with the curator Tom Morton, curator for Frieze art fair and contributin editor for Frieze and with the Artist Charles Avery.
In his exhibition The Islanders, Charles Avery plays the invisible man creating this world, or God if you will. During the last 10 years he have created this imaginary island with the citizens living there and all the houses + events happening on this island. Each character is built with a total history on what they are doing, who they know, and personality. After listening to his explanation of this island it was almost like it existed for real. He could talk for hours about one character, this character one day woke up with a nail in his stomach, how much blood he lost etc.
His world is populated with mythical beasts that haunt the residents surroundings.
Many of the natives are addicted to the local delicacy, pickled eggs, which enslaves them to the island. Hunters in tweed jackets and shotguns search out a Kantian dichotomy while hawkers in the local flea market sell pictures of nude women for the price of peace of mind.
He is born in Oban in 1973, grew up on the Isle of Mull.

DAVID BAJT FOR UVA
Remember when I visited UVA and met my frind David Bajt, he then slept at the office working day and night with this strange light project in a new house north of Kings Cross. He now launched since the house Kings Place just opened. Yesterday I went to see it for the first time, and I was really amazed on how big the ligting screens actually were. I must say, he did a great job!

First Thursdays - Art tour tomoro!
Tomorrow, is the first thursdays, the art event created by TIME OUT LONDON. It´s so many things I want to see, here is my first pick.
1. Charles Avery - The Islanders: An Introduction

Parasol unit foundation for contemporary art
The Islanders: An Introduction is the latest instalment in Scottish artist Charles Avery's epic project which began in 2004. For the first time, the whole project thus far will be brought together including several new works. Avery has created texts, drawings, installations and sculptures which describe the topology and cosmology of an imaginary island, whose every feature embodies a philosophical proposition, problem or solution. Imbued with a formal beauty, humour, and a spirit of philosophical enquiry, these vivid and intricate works invite the viewer to recreate the Island in their own minds, and to use it as an arena for exploring philosophical conundrums and paradoxes.
Charles Avery (b. 1973) lives and works in London.
2. Maya Hewitt - Our Immortal Souls

The exhibition space, created specially by the artist, serves to heighten the viewing experience and emphasise intricate surface details. Strewn with objects and interacting figures, the triptych panels explore a space within her folkloric environment, where painted objects are influenced by the historical narratives of museum pieces. Hewitt turns these banal personal objects into artefacts that are re-invented in paint and re-contextualised by the viewer. Drawn from the artist's familial home, and despite their personalised history, they function as the backdrop for an unrealized theatrical performance.
In the centre of the gallery the artist has created a dark, cluttered workspace emphasising the blurred line between painted fiction and actual reality through physical objects and muffled music.
Hewitt’s works seek to excavate the subtexts which occur beneath the surface of everyday human interactions. Through the use of painted artefacts and reoccurring figures, the artist creates a personal mythology, allowing the viewer to interact with the multilayered narratives found in her work.
